In 1981, marketing boss Bob Everson at Alpine Meadows had an idea to drum up business during the slow season. Locals knew that some of the best snow comes in March – so organizing and hosting a “SnowFest,” in the springtime was well received by the local business community. However, tragedy struck.

On July 4, 1981, Everson died in a boating accident on Lake Tahoe. But his idea survived with the support of the local community which decided to turn the idea into reality.

“SnowFest,” was named one of the top 100 Events in the United States by the American Business Association and made the list of the Top 10 Events in California by the CA Department of Tourism. However, financial troubles concerned locals, who took over and created a 501(c)3 nonprofit. As such, the organization has raised more than $100,000 for local student organizations and other nonprofits.

Today, many of us call this extravaganza, “Mountain Mardi Gras.” There really is something for everyone at the family-friendly festival. To see when and what is going on, please visit the official website.
